Spirit Adrift on boundaries with Gatecreeper, going from doom to heavy metal | Aggressive Tendencies
We caught up with Nate Garrett and Chase Mason of Spirit Adrift (and Gatecreeper) to talk about the differences between their two bands, if there's ever any bleed between the two and why Chase takes on a co-producer role, refusing to learn the songs until the last possible minute. They discuss the project's beginning as an anonymous solo project (on 'Behind - Beyond' and 'Chained to Oblivion') to a full band on 'Curse of Conception' to upcoming LP 'Divided by Darkness.' Nate explains his idea for the band's growth from doom to more of the heavy metal he grew up listening to (Metallica, Slayer, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, etc.) came when driving for Pallbearer on a tour with Baroness and was initially a bit of a joke but became reality. They talk about judgmental Christians, why religion is like science fiction, being psychic post-mushroom trip, making layered music and why Chase doesn't care about lyrics for Gatecreeper. Interview filmed when the band were in Toronto for their show at Hard Luck Bar on August 7, 2018.

For people who don't seem to be able to listen to what he actually says. In broad strokes he says first that he has always been inspired by fucked up things, historical things, cultural things, all over the world and sucks up all of that he can find and write music about it. He also then said that he don't think that black metal should be a commentary about anything politically, socially or hardly even culturally, it should be something beyond that, and he also said that he don't think that the political debate that seems to be in the community isn't about left or right but rather than people are pissed about the political climate over all.

Art evolves with time. I like the analogy and philosophy that you have to keep things flowing like water. Otherwise, it begins to stagnate and rot. I might not enjoy the change in Slipknot's sound, but it's what they need to keep the creativity flowing. Otherwise, it just isn't fun for them anymore.

It's funny, I've felt the opposite. That death metal always felt like a novelty, like a joke. Love some aspects of it but hardcore feels more topically interesting to me. It may just me me but I used to make fund of black and death metal saying "death metal tends to growl low and sing about zombies and serial killers when black metal tends to scream high and sing about satan and dracula" I do like some death metal but as a life long Hatebreed fan I have to disagree from my personal experience. Oh and Jamey, if it wasn't for hatebreed I may have killed myself in my early adulthood, so thank you and Hatebreed

I read about what Kelly was saying on what has happened with his family, I could not hear it. I thought it was another tear down of the fringe of music. I used to do shows opening for Neurosis, have always loved their music. What it stood for and the brilliance of them and the live shows. I questioned another person posting this information and said I really do not believe it. I hope the damage he has caused for his family and the damage he went through to get to the battery and crushing family dynamic will be healed some day. I lived through this and feel he destroyed all that is good to approach his family this way. This may be the most upsetting articles I have ever read. I hope that his family can find a way to forgive, it usually never pans out that way with this terrible behavior even if you lived it before. Really sad info.
